Gardening Mistakes, pt. I May 18, 2008,19:14
garden confessions harvest seeds

As some of you know, this is my first summer growing a vegetable garden. In Minneapolis, it's a bit of a challenge because the last frost is late. This year it was the second week of May, can you believe it?! So it's only been a week or two since I put in my plants, but they've already taught me so much.

First, don't start tomatoes too early. I really screwed myself over with this one. I was overeager. Next year, I'm starting my seeds in the last week of April. Seriously.

Second, have extras to give to friends and family.

Third, I didn't think of it during the indoor growing period, but why do I have to leave the grow lamps on constantly? I was having problems with them drying out, and now thinking back, I might have just left it on when I was home in the mornings and evenings, for 3-6 hours a piece. Not sure.

Fourth, something I did right, I tried new things! Wish me luck with the garden berries and watermelon though...

Fifth, I will have dreams about pepper plants nearly every night. I had a dream last night I bit into a giant red pepper that was ripe early. And it was delicious and rich. Gardening dreams are rewarding, but not as rewarding as the actually garden.

Sixth, set aside time to spend outside simply enjoying the garden. It's the most relaxing thing. I didn't realize that would be a side benefit other than the main one of a bounty of fresh veggies.

Seventh, herbs can be grown indoors year round. Well of course, but why don't more people do it? It's so easy and cheap. Especially herbs that are best fresh, like basil and cilantro, that are extremely easy to grow. I'm so glad I did that.

There will be more. My plants teach me something new every day.
