Overnight Crockpot Oatmeal
Kudos and total credit to www.tipnut.com for demystifying the oatmeal slow cook process. Follow these Tipnut recommendations
for successful Crockpot oatmeal. Do a test batch during the day to be sure your Crockpot passes muster. Use the right size Crockpot and ONLY steel cut oats (a.k.a. Irish Oatmeal); never instant or quick-cook varieties. Each serving of oatmeal is 1/4 cup steel cut oats to 1 cup water and a dash of salt, optional. Thicker oatmeal can be achieved with less water and/or more oats. If your Crockpot doesn't have a timer buy and inexpensive appliance timer and start the process while you sleep. The Bain-Marie method - ingredients in a dish that fits inside the Crockpot, then fill the Crockpot with water so the level is half way up the dish - is virtually fail safe.

Scandinavian Christmas Glogg
Here in the Midwest, people with Scandinavian roots enjoy spiced-wine punch which gets its punch from the addition of aquavit
or brandy. To take the chill off cold winter nights, it's served hot in cups with several almonds and raisins added to each serving.

Slow-Grilled Squash
In season now, “while weather is still nice for outdoor dining”, Amelia Saltsman advises in The Santa Monica Farmer’s Cookbook
(©Blenheim Press 2007; available at www.amazon .com) to grill squash slowly on the barbecue “until the outside is crisp but not burnt and the inside is tender and tinged with smoke and spice.” And that is exactly what happens. She also recommends this method with delicate squash; it works well with acorn too!
