It's Time to Garden May 07, 2008,07:14
spring garden produce harvest

Yesterday, I finally brought all of the plants that I had grown indoors outside into the light spring rain!

Some of them, I must confess, were unhappy with me. It's easy to get busy and forget, but there was one plant in particular I was really worried about - a pretty little annual I had gotten to grow really big indoors and was ready to put out.

It was shrinking from lack of water. But the basil and sage and cilantro... even the anise hyssop was just thriving!

So I picked some spinach and basil before I went inside for a fresh and simple spring salad - just toss on a little olive oil and salt. When the leaves come fresh like that, they barely need anything to accent them. They're really good as is... you'll feel a bit like a rabbit though.

The peas and lettuce are already sprouting up and over the weekend I'll get all the indoor plants into the dirt... it will be a garden packed tight and from it, you will see tons of recipes!

Hey, if the economy crashes, at least I can still eat.

One more thing, if you're in the Twin Cities, make sure to check out the Friends' plant sale this weekend - you know those plants will do great in your garden because they were grown here!

Does anyone else have a garden?

Whispering to my seeds Jan 30, 2008,12:57
garden yarrow tomatoes basil

Even though it's January and -20 degrees with wind chill, I am starting seeds. Why so early? The seeds I'm starting might take a while to germinate. Yarrow could take months, even years. But the basil won't take long... And I can set it up by my windows and let it grow, taller every day. I started Thai Basil and Sweet Basil. I also started lychee seeds and kiwi. Those are precious and hard to grow, even in containers. I feel it will take more to grow them than simple grow lights and water. So I'm telling them, very quietly, how excited I am. And I've promised them they will be used in exquisite, never seen before recipes... Wish me luck!
