Lemon Balm, including citronella and other members of the mint family are touted to be excellent pest repellents (1). However, I’ve never found them to effectively keep bees, mosquitoes, and flys away from guests or food at outdoor gatherings. Plus, I think the scent of citronella candles is an unappetizing mix with food.
Recently, I witnessed a fellow hiker with a floral-scented Bounce dryer sheet tacked to the back of her baseball cap complete the trek unbothered. As anti-chemical-pro-environment as I am, that was evidence enough for me to hold my breath in the laundry product aisle long enough to find Bounce Unscented. On patio furniture, slid a sheet between the frame and cushions. Duct tape sheets on the under side of tables then be pest free for about eight hours.
